One conclusion can be drawn from the survey, cited on this page, by GSEE’s Labor Institute: The more jobs are protected, the higher the unemployment rate will rise.
In Greece, the privileges of specific professional groups are protected at all cost. As a result, the country has the highest unemployment rate in the European Union, double that of countries such as Britain and Ireland.
Behind the statistics in the survey, there are 46,200 tragic stories of people aged over 50 who have lost all hope of working again or even of eventually receiving a pension at a certain age.
Socially and financially marginalized, these people are the victims of a few “leftist” visions that have been protecting union privileges.
If there are no reforms in the near future, the figures are likely to rise even higher.
